Godriguez 2024 Christmas Ornament - Jólakötturinn (the Yule cat)

$30.00

Jólakötturinn, or the Yule Cat, is a mythical creature from Icelandic folklore. It is a giant, fearsome cat said to roam the snowy countryside during Christmas time. Unlike many festive creatures, Jólakötturinn isn’t known for spreading joy—instead, it serves as a warning.

According to tradition, the Yule Cat preys on those who fail to receive new clothes before Christmas Eve. This stems from a historic custom where Icelandic households encouraged hard work by rewarding diligent workers with new clothes for the holiday. The idea was that those who didn’t work hard enough would be left without new garments and thus become prey for the Yule Cat.

The front of the Orn-lament is that of the Jólakötturinn awaiting you on christmas eve and the back features the Godriguez Batskull logo and the year of this ornament’s issue
